Mark's Work Wearhouse, a division of Canadian Tire Corporation Ltd. (TSE:CTR.a, CTR) operates 169 stores across Canada including 24 L'Equipeur stores in Quebec. The company is currently implementing a super brand strategy in a move to consolidate its businesses. This will double the store count, operating over 300 Mark's Work Wearhouse stores by 2003. Founded in 1977, the company markets and sells its own private label brands – Denver Hayes and Wind River; and offers an extensive collection of business casual, weekend, work wear and accessories for men and women between the ages of 25 and 60 who don't have to wear a suit and tie to work.
Mark's uses a leading edge Java based POS thin client system developed by Retek, formerly Chelsea Systems of Texas, USA. They chose Tender Retail Merchant Connect Multi because the software communicates directly with the PINpad, avoiding the POS having to interact directly with the PINpad. Each ECR lane PINpad in each store communicates to the central credit card server without any direct interaction with the local POS applications (a mini application is available locally for redundancy).
A five week schedule to complete certification was established in order to roll the project out in 2002. Financial Institution letters were received within the five week deadline and the project was successfully rolled out on schedule!
