Mobile phone penetration and text messaging in Canada are increasing at an exponential rate. According to a Reuters survey, more than 70% of respondents would elect to have digital receipts sent directly to their mobile phone if merchants offered the option. The main reasons cited include negating the environmental impact of printed receipts and the convenience of storing and accessing transaction details digitally.

Apple Canada and Tender Retail have teamed up to allow Apple’s in-store customers to avoid the checkout line completely. Drawing on technology developed for the computer maker’s US retail environment, Tender Retail and Apple have launched a Canadian-exclusive payment process that allows floor staff to complete a credit or gift card transaction anywhere in the store via a handheld card reader. The receipt is then e-mailed to the buyer, resulting in vastly improved customer through-put and satisfaction.
